shotguns vs. lavalier mics?
for making a movie, whats a better choice a microphone boy with a boom pole and headphones or a Lavalier Mic on the actors neck.
For "the pope" i'm not into porno.
ALWAYS use booms if you're filming anything other than interviews or news, for the simple fact that if the lav is visible, the reader won't be able to fully become absorbed in the movie and will be constantly reminded that what is happening isn't real and is only acting. Not to say that people watching movies think they are real of anything, but there is this whole "suspension of disbelief" thing where you won't be able to focus on the movie if you can see the microphones.
Booms also get you better quality because they are cardiod mics and pick up what they are aimed at, but reject sounds to the side and rear. Lavaliers, on the other hand, will pick up any and all noises since they are omni-directional. This also means that any time the actor moves and their shirt brushes up against the mic, it will pick up the scratchy sound. Boom mics are a terrific investment and provide superior quality. The only way you could get better sound is if you went into a Recording Studio during post-production and re-recorded all of the speaking parts.
Definitely go with the boom.
