Computer Recording Problem: I only get left channel when recording with a mic in windows XP. Help me?

I am plugging a regular microphone into my new Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows XP (via USB converter). I have used other microphones (including one that plugs directly into the computer) with the same problem so I assume that it’s not the mics. I get good surround sound all the time when I not recording, so I know that it works. But when I go to record, no matter what software I use, only the left channel shows up. I searched the internet and found only a couple of people with the same problem on web forums, and no one seemed to be able to help them. Is there any way I can get both channels working when I record? Please help me.

most 5.1 sound cards will have 3 sockets.
these can then be configured depending upon speaker/input connections:
for surround sound - front, rear and sub
for 2 speakers - output, line in and mic
so just make sure it is configured for just 2 speaker mode here, and will give you the proper mic input.

possibly here you are using the stereo line connection with a mono mic and will only receive one channel.
the speakers can be configured under sounds in control panel and recording levels in the xp volume control mixer, under options..properties.. the various control you want will be selected.

but not sure what usb adapter mentioned is might be a different story...
