Why is my wireless connection speed faster than my wired speed?

I use a linksys router and particularly when I play on line games such as cs 1.6 i realised that i get a faster (yet not fast enough) connection when i use the wireless. The wired connection lags noticably as compared to the wireless. And wired connections are supposed to be faster? Any suggestions? I want a faster connection speed

Your wireless connection uses a seperate network adapter.
Check the configuration of your wired network adapter is correct.
Check you are not using a damaged cable, a damaged cable can still transmit and recieve information albeit with more loss.
Disable the wireless connection completely whilst your wired connection is in use, in some circumstances having both connected at once can cause problems.
If your router is quite old (unlikely), check it is has cable of auto-sensing the type of cable in use, if it is not, you might find your using a cable designed for connecting a PC to another PC rather than a PC to a Router (on modern routers this does not matter).
If your PC is very old and you have subsequently installed an aftermarket wireless adapter, it's possible (though unlikely), that your wired connection is only capable of 10mbps, whereas your wireless one could be capable of up to 54mbps.
Check you are using correct drivers for your wired network adapter, if you have installed incorrect drivers, you could severely inhibit performance.
Finally,having downloaded up-to-date and correct drivers for both devices, using device manager (found in control panel), remove both the wired and wireless network adapter, then re-start your machine, Windows will identify the adapters and reload drivers for them. This will also wipe MTU settings etc and other things that can be messed up by running things like network accelerators.
Once this is done, log into your Linksys router and check that QOS settings, if available, are not throttling bandwidth over specific ports, such as those required for gaming.
